IN THE NEWS: Representing ML baseball, the Yankees' Yogi Berra visits Italy to present baseball equipment and aid in the sport's development.

The Phils ship Chico Fernandez and Ray Semproch to Detroit for Ken Walters, Ted Lepcio, and minor leaguer Alex Cosmidis. The Cuban born Fernandez was the first black for the Phils, and will be the second black to play for Detroit.

Sunday, December 6th

IN THE NEWS: The White Sox re acquire Minnie Minoso, along with C Dick Brown and pitchers Jake Striker and Don Ferrarese from the Indians. The give up young 1B Norm Cash, OF Bubba Phillips, and C John Romano.

The Cubs trade outfielders Lee Walls and Lou Jackson, and P Bill Henry for slugger Frank Thomas.

Monday, December 7th

IN THE NEWS: American League umpires Bill Summers and Ed Rommel retire.

Tuesday, December 8th

IN THE NEWS: American League President Joe Cronin reports that expansion plans are indefinite. Branch Rickey scores him for his indecisiveness.

The Continental League awards a franchise to Atlanta.

Two days after trading Norm Cash, the White Sox send young OF Johnny Callison to the Phillies for veteran infielder Gene Freese. This ranks as one of the Phils' better trades.

Friday, December 11th

IN THE NEWS: The A's Arnold Johnson gives the New York Yankees an early Christmas present when he gift wraps Roger Maris in pinstripes. The Yankees acquire the slugger in a 7-player deal that sends P Don Larsen, RF Hank Bauer, 1B Marv Throneberry, and LF Norm Siebern to the Athletics.

The Orioles elect Lee MacPhail as president of the club.

Tuesday, December 15th

IN THE NEWS: The Reds send 2B Johnny Temple to the Indians for 2B Billy Martin, P Cal McLish, and 1B Gordy Coleman.

Thursday, December 17th

IN THE NEWS: In a child-payment hearing related to his divorce, Ted Williams alleges the Red Sox paid him $60,000, not the reported $100,000. He claims his entire yearly income was $83,000.
