Wednesday, October 1st

IN THE NEWS: In the WS, the Braves pick up where they left off the previous year, defeating the Yankees behind Warren Spahn 4-3 in 10 innings.

Thursday, October 2nd

IN THE NEWS: The Braves erupt for 7 runs in the first and go on to defeat the Yankees 13-5. Lew Burdette is shaky but beats New York for the 4th consecutive time. He also chips in with a 3-run HR.

Saturday, October 4th

IN THE NEWS: Yankee pitchers Don Larsen and Ryne Duren combine for a shutout as New York wins 4-0. Yankee OF Hank Bauer accounts for all 4 runs, including a 2-run homer in the 7th.

A Tokyo schoolboy star named Sadaharu Oh is signed by the Yomiuri Giants for a bonus of Y13,000,000 (about $55,000). Oh will become one of the most famous players in baseball, setting many world hitting records.

The Sporting News names Washington OF Albie Pearson and Yankee P Ryne Duren as its AL Rookies of the Year; the Giants 1B Orlando Cepeda and P Carl Willey of the Braves as its NL Rookies of the Year.

Sunday, October 5th

IN THE NEWS: Milwaukee goes up 3 games to one with a 3-0 shutout by Warren Spahn, who allows just 2 hits. The Braves stop Hank Bauer's 17-game WS hitting streak, dating back to 1956.

Monday, October 6th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees finally solve Lew Burdette, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th and winning 7-0 behind the 5-hit pitching of Bob Turley.

Tuesday, October 7th

IN THE NEWS: The Yanks pull even at 3 games, as Hank Bauer hits his 4th HR of the Series and New York wins 4-3 in 10 innings.

Wednesday, October 8th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees win the WS handily on Moose Skowron's 3-run HR off Lew Burdette in the 8th that puts the game on ice 6-2. Eddie Mathews strikes out for the 11th time, a record that will stand until l980 when broken by Willie Wilson of Kansas City. The Braves' 53 strikeouts are also a new WS record. This is Casey Stengel's 7th championship, tying him with Joe McCarthy for the most Series won.

Thursday, October 9th

IN THE NEWS: Twenty members of the Cardinals embark on an Asian goodwill tour, stopping in Manila and Tokyo.

Monday, October 13th

IN THE NEWS: The commissioner fines 22 Milwaukee players $50 each for divulging their WS share.

The ML fines Yankees P Ryne Duren $250 for giving the "choke" sign to an umpire during the WS.

Tuesday, October 21st

IN THE NEWS: P Kazuhisa Inao posts his 4th consecutive win in the Japan Series to bring the Nishitetsu Lions to a dramatic win after losing the first 3 games to the Yomiuri Giants.
