Saturday, March 3rd

IN THE NEWS: In an effort to keep the Giants in New York, Manhattan Borough President Hulan Jack makes plans for a new 110,000-seat stadium over the New York Central railroad tracks, on a 470,000-foot site stretching from 60th to 72nd streets on Manhattan's West Side. The estimated cost of $75 million for the stadium eventually dooms the project and will be a major factor in Horace Stoneham's decision to move to San Francisco.

The Giants and Indians cancel an exhibition game in Meridian, MS, because of racial violence in neighboring Alabama.

Wednesday, March 7th

IN THE NEWS: The player reps accept the owners' decisions on minimum pay and the World Series TV pact. They seek workman's compensation coverage. The player reps rehire J.M. Lewis as their representative.

Sunday, March 11th

IN THE NEWS: At Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, there are no maybes about it as Mickey Mantle hits a Grapefruit League pitch from Larry Jackson over the left field wall into the bay. The Yanks top the Cards 4–3. Musial contends, "no home run has ever cleared my head by as much as long as I can remember." He'll hit another at Al Lang Field on March 20th off Bob Mave to that also lands in the water. Mantle will clock a 500-foot shot in Miami on the 24th against the Dodgers.

IN THE NEWS: Satchel Paige signs with the Birmingham Black Barons (Negro League) at age 50 to play and manage.

IN THE NEWS: The Indians sign OF/1B Sam Mele, just released by the Red Sox.
