Williams finishes the season at .356, well ahead of Kaline's .340, but does not have enough at bats to win the batting title. The same thing happened in 1954. Williams was walked 136 times in 1954 and 71 times (an AL-leading 17 were intentional) this year. A rule change will be made to recognize plate appearances, not times at bat.

IN THE NEWS: The Yanks win the first game of the WS, as Whitey Ford beats Don Newcombe, 6-5. In a controversial play with Frank Kellert at bat, Jackie Robinson steals home in the 8th to bring the Dodgers to within a run of a tie. Films later disclose that Robinson is out by a whisker, but Yankee C Yogi Berra actually balked on the play, receiving Whitey Ford's pitch before Kellert could swing at it.

IN THE NEWS: In Game 2, lefty Tommy Byrne defeats Dodger Billy Loes 4-2 to go 2 games up. The pitcher's 2-run single caps a 4-run 4th for the Yanks. Byrne becomes the only lefty to hurl a complete game against Brooklyn in 1955.
