IN THE NEWS: The WS moves to Ebbets Field as Carl Erskine establishes a new Series strikeout record by fanning 14 Yanks, including Mickey Mantle and Joe Collins 4 times each. Roy Campanella breaks a 2-2 tie with a game-winning solo HR in the 8th for a 3-2 Brooklyn win

Sunday, October 4th

IN THE NEWS: In Game 5, Mickey Mantle hits a grand slam off Russ Meyer, and the Yanks hold on to win 11-7.

Monday, October 5th

IN THE NEWS: The Yanks end the WS in 6 as Billy Martin's 12th WS hit, a record-breaking single to CF in the bottom of the 9th, gives the Yankees their 5th championship in a row. Carl Furillo had tied it up in the 9th with a 2-run HR.

Wednesday, October 7th

IN THE NEWS: Bill Veeck tells stockholders that he faces bankruptcy unless they drop their suit to block the move to Baltimore. The Browns stockholders will drop their suit against Veeck.

Thursday, October 8th

IN THE NEWS: Cuba defeats Venezuela 4-0 before 32,000 partisan fans in Caracas's University Stadium.

The city of Birmingham, AL, bars Jackie Robinson's Negro-White All-Stars from playing there. Robinson gives in and drops the white players from his group.

Tuesday, October 13th

IN THE NEWS: The Yankees buy the contracts of black players Elston Howard and Vic Power from the Kansas City Blues.

Wednesday, October 14th

IN THE NEWS: The Dodgers force Charley Dressen's resignation as manager when he refuses to sign anything less than a one-year contract. The club reportedly offered him a $7,500 raise, but on the insistence of his wife he tried for a 2-year contract and lost. Dressen immediately signs to manage the Oakland Oaks in the PCL.
