IN THE NEWS: The Yankees' Johnny Mize's pinch-hit grand slam gives the Yanks a 5-1 win at Washington. He has now homered in each one of the 15 ML parks, including Sportsman's Park in St. Louis while in each league.

OF Don Grate of Chattanooga sets a record for a long toss of a baseball in Chattanooga's Engel Stadium, with a throw of just one inch better than 434 feet, breaking a 42-year-old mark set by Larry LeJeune on October 3, 1908. Grate will improve his own record to 443 feet 31Ž2 inches on August 23, 1953.

IN THE NEWS: In a Cold War move, the Russians decry the American game of baseball by citing their own game of "lapka" as being the progenitor of baseball. They call American players "slaves." The State Department links the Soviet claim as the founders of baseball as part of its "Hate America" campaign.

The Braves play their last game in Boston's Braves Field before moving to Milwaukee, losing to Brooklyn's Joe Black 8-2. The Dodgers clinch a tie for the pennant. The crowd of 8,822 is the Braves' 2nd largest of the season.

Stan Musial makes his only ML pitching appearance. With his 6th batting title wrapped up, he takes the mound against the Cubs Frank Baumholtz, the runner-up in the batting race. Baumholtz, batting righthanded, reaches base on an error, and Harvey Haddix relieves Musial. The Cubs win 3-0 behind Paul Minner.
