IN THE NEWS: The baseball writers select Phillies relief P Jim Konstanty as the National League's MVP.

Monday, November 6th

IN THE NEWS: Branch Rickey signs a 5-year contract as executive vice president/GM with the Pirates.

Wednesday, November 8th

IN THE NEWS: The Baseball Writers Association of America announces that slugging 1B Walt Dropo of the Boston Red Sox is the Rookie of the Year in the American League.

Commissioner Happy Chandler and player reps agree on the split of the TV-radio rights from the World Series.

Thursday, November 9th

IN THE NEWS: The Associated Press chooses Phillie skipper Eddie Sawyer as Manager of the year.

The baseball writers name Sam Jethroe of the Boston Braves as the National League Rookie of the Year.

The White Sox release Luke Appling, who has been with the Sox since 1930, so he can become the manager of the Memphis Chicks (SA). He accepted the job with the Chicks on November 1. He'll be named minor league manager of the year, by The Sporting News, in 1952.

Friday, November 10th

IN THE NEWS: After nine years at the helm, the Indians fire their manager, Lou Boudreau, amid the howls of fan protest. Although Boudreau's overall winning percentage is a moderate .529, he won 92 games in a 4th-place finish, his best showing since 97 in the championship year of 1948. Al Lopez, who has piloted Minneapolis (AA) since 1948, takes over with a 2-year contract.

IN THE NEWS: League presidents Ford Frick and Will Harridge vote to deposit $950,000 received for World Series TV-radio rights into the player's pension fund.

Monday, November 20th

IN THE NEWS: Pirate GM Roy Hamey resigns to make way for Branch Rickey.

Sunday, November 26th

IN THE NEWS: The Gillette Safety Razor Co. signs a 6-year deal, worth an estimated $6 million, with ML baseball for the TV-radio rights for the World Series.

Monday, November 27th

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox sign former Cleveland SS great Lou Boudreau as a player to a 2-year contract worth an estimated $150,000.

Tuesday, November 28th

IN THE NEWS: Having ousted Branch Rickey, Walter O'Malley now fires Burt Shotton as manager. Oakland (PCL) manager Chuck Dressen is his replacement.
