IN THE NEWS: Rookie Bill McCahan of the Philadelphia Athletics no-hits the Washington Senators 3-0. 1B Ferris Fain allows the only runs when his toss to McCahan on an easy grounder in the 2nd inning goes wide. McCahan, the former Duke University star, was the losing pitcher when Don Black threw his no-hitter July 10th. The Senators have not suffered a no-hitter since Ernie Shore pitched his 26-out perfect game in 1917.

IN THE NEWS: Ralph Kiner hits his record 8th HR in 4 games to pass Johnny Mize in the HR race as Pittsburgh tops the Boston Braves 4-3. The rain of HRs exceeds the 7 in 4 games hit by Tony Lazzeri in 1936. On the 18th Kiner will again pass Mize in the homer derby by belting his 50th of the season. Mize will get his 50th two days later. Kiner will get number 51 on September 23 against Jim Hearn of the Cards, and Mize will tie it up 2 days later off Johnny Sain of Boston. Both players have until the season finales on September 28 to break the tie, but neither will succeed.

IN THE NEWS: On the season's last day, the Browns, desperate for a ticket seller, bring announcer Dizzy Dean in to pitch against the White Sox. Diz gives up only 3 hits in 4 innings and laces a clean single in his only at bat, but a pulled leg muscle forces his retirement. The White Sox score all their runs in the 9th to win 5-2. Even with Diz, the game draws less than 16,000, and the Browns finish the year with only 320,000 attendance, less than half that of 1946. Three days before the finale a Browns' game drew only 350.
