Tuesday, January 1st

IN THE NEWS: George Trautman, head of the American Association, becomes general manager of Detroit, succeeding Jack Zeller, who retires after 25 years with the Tigers.

Wednesday, January 2nd

IN THE NEWS: The White Sox buy P Alex Carrasquel and SS Fred Vaughan from the Senators. Carrasquel will make only three appearances for Chicago before being farmed out. When the Sox acquire his nephew Chico Carrasquel in 1949, the Sox will swap Alex for reliever Luis Aloma, who will act as an interpreter for the young Venezuelan shortstop.

Thursday, January 3rd

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox get Rudy York from Detroit in a trade for Eddie Lake.

Saturday, January 5th

IN THE NEWS: Catcher Walker Cooper goes to the Giants. The sale by the Cardinals for $175,000 is the highest cash deal ever. The Joe Cronin transaction in 1934 and the Dizzy Dean sale in 1938 were larger deals but also involved other players. Cooper was considered the best catcher in the game before his 1945 induction into the Navy following a salary dispute with the team.

Sunday, January 6th

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox announce that they have signed a working agreement with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans are managed by John Peacock, a former Boston catcher.

Saturday, January 12th

IN THE NEWS: The first professional league game is played in Venezuela, launching the newly constituted 4-team Liga de Beisbol Profesional de Venezuela. The game is won by Magallanes 5–2.

Tuesday, January 22nd

IN THE NEWS: The Red Sox sell veteran 3B Jim Tabor to the Phillies.
