Tuesday, February 5th

IN THE NEWS: The Phils purchase P Al Jurisich and OF Johnny Wyrostek from the Cardinals.

The Cardinals sell OF/1B Johnny Hopp to the Braves for a reported $40,000 and the transfer of infielder Eddie Joost to the Cardinals' Rochester farm team. Hopp will play well in Boston, while the veteran Joost will break in as a regular with the A's in 1947.

Saturday, February 9th

IN THE NEWS: Pirate southpaw Preacher Roe suffers a brain concussion in an altercation with a referee in an Arkansas basketball game.

Friday, February 15th

IN THE NEWS: Detroit's Hank Greenberg signs for $60,000 and then marries New York department store heiress Carol Gimbel three days later.

Tuesday, February 19th

IN THE NEWS: Giants OF Danny Gardella becomes the first major leaguer to announce he is jumping to the "outlaw" Mexican League, the first shot in the series of events that will dominate baseball even more than the return of all the war veterans. His attempt to return to the ML a few years later will initiate a major court battle.

Monday, February 25th

IN THE NEWS: Ted Williams, back from the service, hits the first spring training pitch he sees for a home run.

The Chicago White Sox hand out the first media guide to beat writers. Just 17 pages long, it is the creation of Marsh Samuel, according to historian Peggy Beck. The project intrigues Bill Veeck, owner of the Cleveland Indians, who hires Samuel away from the Sox to create a guide for the Tribe.

Thursday, February 28th

IN THE NEWS: Alex Carrasquel, White Sox pitcher, signs a 3-year contract with the Mexican League, the first shot in the event that will dominate baseball even more than the return of the war veterans.
