Wednesday, October 3rd

IN THE NEWS: The Tigers and Cubs meet in the WS for the 4th time. Hank Borowy pitches a 6-hitter and Hal Newhouser is roughed up for 8 runs in 3 innings, as the Cubs win 9-0.

Thursday, October 4th

IN THE NEWS: Returning war vets Virgil Trucks and Hank Greenberg produce a 4-1 Detroit win. Trucks, who pitched in only 5 innings of one game at the end of the season, pitches a complete game, giving up 7 hits. Greenberg's 3-run HR in the 5th wins the game.

Friday, October 5th

IN THE NEWS: Claude Passeau of the Chicago Cubs pitches a one-hitter, beating the Detroit Tigers 3-0 in the 3rd game of the WS. Rudy York's 2nd-inning single spoils Passeau's no-hit bid. Bill Nicholson drives in the first run.

Saturday, October 6th

IN THE NEWS: Tavern owner "Billy Goat" Sianis buys a box seat for his goat for the 4th game of the WS and is escorted out of Wrigley Field. In retaliation Sianis casts a "goat curse" over the Cubs. The Tigers tie the series on Dizzy Trout's 5-hit 4-1 win. Detroit scores all its runs in the 4th, with Hank Greenberg, Roy Cullenbine, Paul Richards, and a force-out scoring the runners.

Sunday, October 7th

IN THE NEWS: Hal Newhouser beats Hank Borowy 8-4. A 4-run 6th, including Hank Greenberg's double, provides the margin.

Monday, October 8th

IN THE NEWS: Stan Hack's double takes a tricky bounce over LF Hank Greenberg's shoulder with 2 outs in the 12th inning to give the Chicago Cubs an 8-7 win in the 6th game of the WS. Borowy pitches 4 scoreless innings in relief.

Wednesday, October 10th

IN THE NEWS: The Tigers tally 5 runs in the first inning and rout the Chicago Cubs 9-3 behind Hal Newhouser, who strikes out 10, enabling Detroit to win baseball's most sloppy WS 4 games to 3. The winners get $6,433 a share, 2nd to the 1937 Yankees share. Each Cub gets $3,930. Total receipts of $1.6 million is a WS record.

Monday, October 15th

IN THE NEWS: Attendance in the ML was 10.28 million, breaking the 1940 record. The Tigers led with 1.28 million. The Dodgers, Giants, and Cubs also drew a million.

IN THE NEWS: Branch Rickey announces the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Dodger organization.

Monday, October 29th

IN THE NEWS: Happy Chandler, who had continued to serve in the U.S. Senate after becoming commissioner, resigns his political office. He will presently move the commissioner's quarters to Cincinnati.

Tuesday, October 30th

IN THE NEWS: Branch Rickey signs Jackie Robinson to a Montreal (IL) contract for 1946. Black P John Wright also signs.
