IN THE NEWS: A wartime tone for the season is set when Red Ruffing, just months short of his 38th birthday, and minus four toes, is drafted into the Army Air Corp.
IN THE NEWS: In Chicago, the teams agree to start the season later than usual and prepare to train in areas north of the so-called Eastman-Landis line (named after Joseph Eastman, head of the Department of Transportation, and Judge Landis), an area East of the Mississippi and North of the Ohio and Potomac rivers. The two St. Louis teams are excluded, though they will train in Missouri. Resorts, armories, and university facilities are chosen for training sites. The Dodgers will train at Bear Mountain, NY; Cards, at Cape Girardeau, MO; the Yankees, in Atlantic City. The Red Sox go to Tufts College.
IN THE NEWS: The Yankees send Lefty Gomez to the Boston Braves for cash. He will be released without playing a game and will sign with Washington on May 24th.
IN THE NEWS: The Yankees trade 2B Jerry Priddy and minor leaguer Milo Candini to the Washington Senators for righty Bill Zuber and cash. Zuber, classified 4-F in the draft, will not have a winning season in New York, while Candini will go 117 this year.
