IN THE NEWS: Babe Ruth collapses in the railroad station in Asheville, NC, and winds up in a New York hospital. He'll undergo an operation for an ulcer on April 17th and will be in bed till May 26th.

Tuesday, April 7th

IN THE NEWS: A's long-ball-hitting 1B Joe Hauser is standing still near 1B, minding his own business, when his knee gives way suddenly and the kneecap shatters all by itself. He is out for the season. His other knee will give out in a few years with the same amount of provocation.

Monday, April 13th

IN THE NEWS: Stuffy McInnis is released by the Braves. He'll sign with the Pirates, bat .368 in 59 games, and get into his 5th WS.

Tuesday, April 14th

IN THE NEWS: In the first regular-season Cubs game to be broadcast on the radio, Quin Ryan announces the contest from the grandstand roof for WGN. Grover Alexander wins for the Cubs 8-2 over the Pirates and adds a single, double, and HR.

Cleveland defeats St. Louis 21-14, with the Indians winning it with 12 in the 8th. Browns manager George Sisler makes 4 errors at 1B.

Two future Hall of Famers make their ML debuts for the A's in the same game. Lefty Grove starts against Boston and leaves in the 4th after walking 4 and striking out nobody. He gives up 5 runs on 6 hits. In the 8th, Mickey Cochrane pinch-hits for C Cy Perkins, singles and stays in behind the plate while the A's go on to score 9 runs in the last 4 innings to win 9-8 in 10 innings. Grove, known as Groves in Baltimore, is also listed that way in the New York Times box score. Grove will become the first pitcher to lead the AL in strikeouts and walks in the same year.
