IN THE NEWS: A rain check dispute arises. Cincinnati rain checks read "not to be used after four and a half innings have been completed." But the game is called with the Reds at bat with one out in the bottom of the fifth and the game tied 1-1. The Reds honor the rain checks, but the Braves demand their share of the gate ($2,600), as a legal game has been played, based on the wording of the rain check. In a compromise, the Braves accept $1,300, and the other 6 clubs agree to share the cost. In future all rain checks will read "not good after five innings."
