IN THE NEWS: Cleveland wins its home opener over the Louisville Colonels 54 in 14 innings before only 500 fans. They lose the 2nd game of the twin bill 21.
IN THE NEWS: Pittsburgh's Jack McCarthy gets a game-winning 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th when his drive into the corner goes through a door that a fan then shuts before the fielder can reach it. The league eventually orders this game replayed.
New York's Tom O'Brien receives perhaps the first intentional walk in ML history. In the 8th inning, with men on 2nd and 3rd with one out, Ed Delahanty trots to the mound to tell A's P Jack Fifield to walk O'Brien, who has hit well all day. The next batter, Fred Hartman, hits into a DP.
IN THE NEWS: Reds P Bill Damman allows 11 hits but shuts out St. Louis, 110.
IN THE NEWS: Harry Wolverton's bases-loaded home run in the bottom of the 9th gives the Chicago Orphans an 87 victory over Cleveland.
IN THE NEWS: Ed Delahanty of the Phillies, who hit four home runs in a game in 1896, collects four doubles in a 90 victory over New York, the only player to achieve these dual records.
IN THE NEWS: Willie Keeler, one of the smallest players and best bunters, drives the ball past startled LF Ed Delahanty of the Phillies for an inside-the-park grand slam and an 85 victory for Brooklyn.
IN THE NEWS: Honus Wagner is 3-for-5 against the Cleveland Spiders, but Louisville loses when Wagner is doubled off 2nd base to end the game. Honus forgot how many outs there and did not get back to the base in time. Cleveland OF Louis Sockalexis is fined in police court for public intoxication. The club releases him, and he signs with Hartford of the Eastern League.
Sporting Life indirectly criticizes joint ownership of two clubs with this comment: "Syndicate Baseball ResultsMay 17, 1898, Cleveland 16 W, eight L; May 17, 1899, Cleveland three W, 20 L."
IN THE NEWS: In Cincinnati, Giants pitcher Cy Seymour hits two doubles and two singles, but his wildness costs him a win against the Reds. With the bases loaded in the 9th and score tied 66, Seymour hands out his 13th walk of the game to force in the winning run.
IN THE NEWS: In just his 7th big league game, Deacon Phillippe of Louisville tosses a 70 no-hitter against the Giants. He walks three batters but will become baseball's best control pitcher with a career average of 1.25 bases on balls per game. The Colonels collect just four hits off Ed Doheny in scoring their seven runs.
IN THE NEWS: Boston RF Chick Stahl goes 6-for-6 in a 1610 romp over Cleveland.
