In New York, the Giants stop Louisville in the first of 2 games. Because this game was transferred from Louisville without league consent, no league official is present. Two players, Charlie Dexter and Mike Sullivan, umpire the 6-1 Giant victory. This game will later be dropped from the standings.

In the midst of the season's longest winning streak, Boston blanks Pittsburgh 4-0 to move past Cincinnati into 2nd place.

15th

Pittsburgh loses to Washington 10-8 despite Gene DeMontreville's 5 hits.

Louisville president Harry Pulliam fires manager Rogers and replaces him with 24-year-old OF Fred Clarke. In addition to his $2,400 salary, Clarke gets an extra $500 for managing the team.

The Reds explode for 12 runs in the 3rd inning and whip Brooklyn 15-6.

Joett Meekin allows 10 hits and his teammates commit 4 errors, but New York still manages to shut out Cleveland 7-0. The next day the Indians are held to 3 hits and lose 5-0.

Frank Killen allows 5 Baltimore hits as he pitches Pittsburgh to victory. Willie Keeler fails to get a hit for the first time in 1897 after 44 straight games.

21st

Boston moves into first by posting its 17th straight victory, beating Brooklyn 11-6. Winning pitcher Fred Klobedanz has a single, 2 doubles, and a triple.

22nd

Boston's winning streak is halted at 17 as Brooklyn pitcher Bill Kennedy defeats the Beaneaters 7-4.

Baltimore takes advantage of Boston's first loss in 18 games and moves back into first place by defeating New York.

23rd

The Beaneaters regain the NL lead with a 13-2 rout of Brooklyn.

Dick Harley leads the Browns to a 12-inning 7-6 victory over Pittsburgh by going 6-for-6.

26th

Pittsburgh CF Steve Brodie's string of consecutive games ends at 574. His arm is so sore the Pirates go on the road without him. The streak is a 19th-century NL record, but falls 3 games short of George Pinckney's 577 ML mark.

Jack Stenzel hits a solo HR with 2 out in the 9th inning to give the Orioles a 1-0 victory over Boston, its first in an important 3-game series with the NL leaders.

Chicago scores in every inning to demolish Louisville 36-7 to set the NL record for runs scored. The Colts pile up 32 hits for 51 bases with Barry McCormick hitting 4 singles, a triple, and a HR in 8 at bats.

30th

Southpaw Cy Seymour of the Giants allows 11 walks in a loss to Orioles. He will be a 20-game winner this year and lead all pitchers in strikeouts with 157.
