» April 6, 2001: The Phillies retire Jim Bunning's uniform number before their home opener, a 3–2 loss to the Cubs. The game is delayed an hour, 51 minutes by rain. Cubs reliever Todd Van Poppel strikes out all five batters he faces while Jeff Fassero gets his 2nd save in two nights. Previously, his last save was June 30, 1993. Julio Zuleta hits the first Cub homer of the year.
» May 5, 2001: Leading the Dodgers, 4-1, the Cubs score eight runs in the 7th and eight more in the 8th to defeat LA, 20-1. Sammy Sosa, Todd Hundley, and Julio Zuleta homer for Chicago, with Zuleta's 3-run pinch capping the scoring in the 7th. Chicago scores eight in the 8th on five hits before LA third baseman Chris Donnels takes the mound and gets the final out. It was the 15th time since 1900 that the Cubbies have scored 20 runs in a game and the 11th time they've done it at "The Friendly Confines." The Cubs last scored 20 runs at Wrigley on June 3, 1987.

The Diamondbacks defeat the Cubs, 4-0, as Randy Johnson (5 innings), Byung-Hyun Kim (3 innings), and Bret Prinz (1 inning) combine on a one-hitter. The Cubs have now lost eight in a row. Before tomorrow's game, Julio Zuleta will borrow a scene from the movie Major League and use a voodoo stick on the Cubs bats to instill hits. It works.
