The 6'5" 220-lb Zauchin, Boston's hope as a righthanded, power-hitting first baseman, hit 27 HR with 93 RBI as a rookie in 1955. He also struck out an AL-high 105 times. He had three homers and drove in ten runs against Washington that May 27. Failing to hit after 1955, he was traded to the Senators in 1958. (PB)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 27, 1955: In just the first five innings, Norm Zauchin hits three home runs and a double and drives in 10 runs as the Red Sox slaughter the Senators 16–0. Pitcher Tom Brewer coasts for the win.

» January 23, 1958: In a good trade for both teams, the Washington Senators trade SS Pete Runnels to the Red Sox for 1B Norm Zauchin and OF Albie Pearson. Runnels will win two batting titles, in 1960 and 1962, and just miss by six points in 1958.

» May 11, 1958: Washington P Truman "Tex" Clevenger gets both the assist and the putout in retiring Yankee batter Elston Howard. Clevenger is hit by a line drive and the ball bounces off his leg into foul territory near 1B. Tex then covers 1B to receive the toss from 1B Norm Zauchin.

» August 29, 1977: At Fenway, Jim Rice clubs three homers—in the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th inning—but Boston loses to the Oakland A's, 8–7. Rice added a single in the 4th. He is the first Bosox player to hit the hat trick since Norm Zauchin on May 27, 1955.
