Brimming with immense natural talent, shortstop Robin Yount was just eighteen years old when he was first called up to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1974, immediately becoming one of the youngest regulars in baseball history. Combining that head start with steady production in the face of injuries, hard-nosed intensity, and admirable team loyalty, Yount became a member of the elite 3,000-hit club eighteen seasons later, still with the Brewers.

After a spring ankle injury and a brief stab at joining the PGA tour, the veteran 22-year-old posted his first outstanding offensive season in 1978, batting .293. Weight training helped bulk up his numbers in ensuing years. He led the league in doubles in 1979 and reached the first peak of his career in 1982, leading Milwaukee to the World Series with a .331 batting average, 29 homers, and 114 RBI -- all career highs. He also led the league in hits, tied for the lead in doubles, and led shortstops with 489 assists. After the season, he was awarded both a Gold Glove and the AL MVP Award. He was the top vote-getter for the All-Star Game.

Shoulder surgery after the 1984 season threatened to end Yount's career before his 30th birthday, but he held on, moving to center field to put a little less pressure on his throwing arm. Though he adapted well to the outfield, Yount's power was significantly reduced, but it wasn't long until he was his old self again. Yount batted above .300 four consecutive years (1986-89) and had yet another incredible MVP season in 1989. Hitting .318

with 21 home runs and 103 RBI, Yount became only the third player -- Hank Greenberg and Stan Musial were the others -- to win an MVP award at two different positions.

The 3,000-hit plateau was fast approaching, though the team-minded Yount was typically modest about the achievement. "I guess if you play long enough and go to the plate enough times, you're going to get a certain amount of hits," he said toward the end of the 1992 season. "It's really not that big a deal." Still, Yount became only the 17th man in history to reach the milestone in his career on September 9, 1992 against Cleveland's Jose Mesa. Yount retired after the 1993 season with 3,142 career hits and 1,406 career RBI. Since retiring, he has stepped up his participation in professional motorcycle and automobile racing. (WAG)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 7, 1973: The Rangers make Texas high school P David Clyde the number-one pick in the free-agent draft. He will make his ML debut later this month. U of Minnesota star Dave Winfield, the number four pick (Padres), will also go straight to the ML. Winfield was also taken in the ABA (Utah), NBA (Atlanta) and NFL (Minnesota) drafts. John Stearns is taken 2nd by the Phillies, and the Brewers, picking 3rd, take Robin Yount. Randy Scarbery becomes the first player selected twice in the first round of the regular phase of the draft when the A's take him 23rd. The Astros picked him first in 1970, but he chose college instead. Eddie Bane, 41–4 in his collegiate career, is taken 11th overall by the Twins, who sign him to a club-record bonus. He debuts a week after Clyde. The Reds have a 3rd straight draft in which they come up short, this time selecting California prep OF Brad Kessler with their 1st choice.

» April 12, 1974: Robin Yount, 18, collects his first ML hit for the Brewers during a 5–3 loss to the Orioles. Tomorrow, Yount will get his 2nd hit against the O's—a game-winning home run.

» April 8, 1975: In a club house meeting, Boston captain Carl Yastrzemski criticizes his teammates for their poor attitude in spring training when they went 10–20. In the game, the Sox bomb Jim Slaton for five runs in three innings and defeat Milwaukee, 5–2. Hank Aaron is hitless in his AL debut, while teammate Robin Yount homers. Tony Conigliaro is the Sox DH and is 1-for-4 in his Boston return.

» May 31, 1975: The Royals beat the Brewers 7–5 in a game bridging the generation gap. Home run leaders Henry Aaron and Harmon Killebrew are in their 22nd ML seasons and winning pitcher Lindy McDaniel is in his 21st. All three were playing in the majors before Brewers SS Robin Yount was born.

» September 14, 1975: The Red Sox top the Brewers 8–6 as Robin Yount breaks Mel Ott's 47-year-old record by playing in his 242nd game as a teenager.

» August 25, 1981: Chicago's Dennis Lamp loses his no-hitter when the Brewers Robin Yount leads off the 9th inning with a bloop double. Lamp settles for a one-hit 5–1 win.

» June 5, 1982: The Brew Crew connect for three consecutive homers -- by Robin Yount, Cecil Cooper, and Ben Oglivie -- in the 7th as Milwaukee pounds Oakland, 11–3. Ted Simmons and Gorman Thomas also homer to back Bob McClure's 3rd victory. It is the 2nd time in a week that Milwaukee sluggers have hit three consecutive homers.

» July 19, 1982: The Twins overcome two homers by Robin Yount to beat the Brewers, 6–4. Tom Brunansky hits his 2nd inside-the-park homer of the year (May 28 was the other), but this one is a grand slam off Jerry Augustine. The IP slam is a first in Twins history.

» October 3, 1982: Robin Yount smacks two home runs and a triple as Milwaukee whips Baltimore 10–2 to win the American League East championship. Don Sutton, 4-1 since being acquired by the Brewers in late August, is the winning pitcher. Milwaukee had lost three in a row to Baltimore before today's pivotal victory. Despite Yount's stellar game, he loses the AL batting title .332 to .331 to Kansas City's Willie Wilson, who sat out the Royals' final game. Yount ends the year with 114 RBI and joins teammates Cecil Cooper (121), Gorman Thomas (112), and Ben Oglivie (102) as only the 2nd foursome since 1940 to top the 100 RBI mark: The 1977 Bosox of Fisk, Rice, Hobson and Lynn were the others. Ted Simmons is just three short of 100 RBI or the Brewers would have joined the 1936 Yankees as the only squad with five 100-RBI hitters.

» October 12, 1982: Paul Molitor goes 5-for-6 to become the first player ever to collect five hits in a World Series game, and teammate Robin Yount goes 4-for-6 as the Brewers rout the Cardinals 10–0 in game one.

» October 17, 1982: Robin Yount records his 2nd 4-hit game of the Series to lead the Brewers to a 6–4 win in game five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have two 4-hit games in one World Series.

» November 9, 1982: Robin Yount, who hit .331 for Milwaukee and led the league in hits (210), doubles (46), and slugging percentage (.578), is a unanimous choice as American League MVP.

» September 22, 1987: Teddy Higuera wins his 7th straight as the Brewers down the Yankees, 7–2 in the first of two games. Robin Yount drives in four runs with a homer and double. Yount drives home another five in game 2, including his 20th homer of the season, but it is not enough as New York wins, 10–8.

» June 12, 1988: Robin Yount hits for the cycle, leading Milwaukee to a 16–2 rout of the White Sox.

» July 2, 1989: Brewers OF Robin Yount, 33, collects his 2,500th hit in a 10–2 win over the Yankees. Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Hank Aaron, and Mel Ott are the only players to reach that milestone at a younger age.

» August 26, 1989: Toronto's Dave Stieb pitches his 5th career one-hitter, 7–0 over Milwaukee. The spoiler is Robin Yount's 6th-inning single.

» November 20, 1989: Brewers centerfielder Robin Yount edges the Rangers Ruben Sierra to win his 2nd American League MVP Award. Yount, who won as a SS in 1982, hit .318 last season with 21 home runs and 103 RBI.

» September 3, 1991: Milwaukee's Jim Gantner has a double and hits his 1st homer since 1987, a streak of 1762 at bats without a dinger. In two days he'll hit another. With two outs in the 9th, Robin Yount bangs a 3-run home run off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley for a 5–3 win.

» September 9, 1992: Milwaukee OF Robin Yount gets the 3,000th hit of his career in his team's 5–4 loss to the Indians. He also becomes only the 2nd player in history to record 200 home runs, 200 SBs and 100 triples, duplicating Willie Mays' feat.

» May 28, 1993: Robin Yount and the Brewers defeat George Brett and the Royals, 5-1, in the first meeting of two 3,000-hit players since 1925.

» January 5, 1999: Nolan Ryan, George Brett, and Robin Yount are elected to baseball's Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. It is the first time since 1936 that three players are elected simultaneously on their first try. Carlton Fisk finishes 4th in the voting, missing election by 43 votes.

» July 25, 1999: George Brett, Robin Yount, Nolan Ryan, Orlando Cepeda, are inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

» February 18, 2001: Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor, Jim Rice, and Robin Yount are inducted into Ted Williams' Hitters Hall of Fame in Hernando, Florida.
