Young was a smooth second baseman who rose through the Cardinal farm system and was
bought in 1951 by the Browns, for whom he batted a career-high .260 as a rookie.
When the franchise shifted to Baltimore in 1954, Young, a Maryland native, was the
first player signed to a contract.
