Jim Woods

Possum

1917-1988

Broadcaster

Books and articles about Jim Woods

An excellent number-two announcer in the ML, Woods teamed with Mel Allen and Bob Prince before joining Ned Martin in an extremely popular Red Sox radio duo in the 1970s. Nicknamed Possum, Woods had replaced Dutch Reagan on University of Iowa football broadcasts and Ernie Harwell on Atlanta Crackers baseball broadcasts before joining the Yankees, but was suddenly fired in late 1956 to make room for Phil Rizzuto. Woods had a phenomenal memory, and could, among other things, name every Kentucky Derby winner. (SCL/NLM)
