FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 5, 1998: Toronto defeats Tampa Bay, 2–1, with the help of seven 1/3 strong innings by Roger Clemens. In the game, Clemens fanned Devil Ray LF Randy Winn for his 3,000th career K. Only 10 other pitchers have reached that mark in major league annals.

» May 1, 1999: Detroit hurler Brian Moehler is ejected in the 7th inning for having a piece of sandpaper on his thumb against the Devil Rays. Two batters later, Randy Winn's sacrifice fly gives Tampa Bay the 4–3 win for Bobby Witt. Moehler will receive a 10-game suspension for his actions. Roberto Hernandez gets the save for the Devil Rays. It is the 200th of his career, making him the 1st Latin pitcher to reach the mark.

» August 11, 2001: In the Twins 4–3 loss to Tampa Bay, Minnesota 1B Doug Mientkiewicz makes all three outs in the bottom of the 2nd without touching first base. The Devil Rays have Toby Hall on 3B and Randy Winn on 1B with no outs in the inning when Aubrey Huff hits a weak grounder to Mientkiewicz. The first sacker crosses the diamond to chase Hall back to third then tags out Winn who had run all the way around from first. Mientkiewicz then catches Huff wandering off the base to complete an unassisted double play. The next Rays' batter, Jared Sandberg, hits a towering foul pop-up that Mientkiewicz caught for the third out.

» October 28, 2002: Lou Piniella is named manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Mariners send SS Antonio Perez to Tampa Bay for OF Randy Winn as part of the compensation package.
