In Willoughby's best season, 1929, he was 15-14 with a 4.99 ERA. He compounded the problems of pitching in tiny Baker Bowl with his poor control, walking a league-leading 108 batters (in 243 innings). After falling off to 4-17, 7.59 in 1930, he was traded with Tommy Thevenow for Dick Bartell. (JFC)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 29, 1926: In the only games played today, the 7th place Braves sweep a pair from the last-place Phillies, 7–6 and 2–1. Rookies Johnny Werts and Bunny Hearn are the winning hurlers over Claude Willoughby and Dutch Ulrich.

» June 3, 1927: Paul Waner of Pittsburgh homers off Claude Willoughby of the Phils in a 11–1 rout at Forbes Field. Wright and Grantham also homer as Vic Aldridge allows the visitors just one hit till the 9th inning. For Waner, his homer is the start of a National League record 14 straight games in which he'll have at least one long hit (12 doubles, five triples, three home run).

» April 27, 1929: At Brooklyn, Brooklyn relief pitcher Clise Dudley becomes the first man to hit a home run on the first ML pitch he sees, one thrown by Claude Willoughby. Dudley will hit two more homers in his four ML years. He is more than matched by Chuck Klein, with a single, double and homer from the 7th spot, who leads the Phils to an 8–3 win.

» August 10, 1930: The last place Phillies win 18–0, as Claude "Weeping" Willoughby defeats the Reds in the first game of a twin bill, then take the 2nd game, 4–3. Chuck Klein and Lefty O'Doul each total six hits in the two games. The Phils will tie the ML mark they set last season by playing just six shutout games, winning four and losing 2.

» August 19, 1930: In the first of two, Chicago's Hack Wilson connects off Phils P Sugar Sweetland for his 43rd home run, tying Chuck Klein's National League record set last year. In RF, Klein waves to Wilson as he circles the bases. The Phils hold on for a 9–8 win with Claude Willoughby the winner over rookie Bud Teachout. The second game ends in a 6–6 tie after 16 innings.

» November 6, 1930: The Pirates trade SS Dick Bartell, a .320 hitter, to the Phillies for defensive star SS Tommy Thevenow, and P Claude Willoughby. The Phils get the better of the shortstop swap, while Willoughby lives up to his nickname "Flunky."
