The Anaheim Angels take Troy Glaus, UCLA 3B with the 3rd pick. The Giants, use 4th to take Seton Hall pitcher Jason Grilli, son of former ML pitcher Steve Grilli. Toronto uses #5 on Texas high schooler Vernon Wells. The Mets have the 6th pick and pick Tampa high schooler Geoff Goetz, nixing another Florida pitcher Rick Ankiel because he is being advised by agent Scott Boras: Ankiel goes to the Cards at #72 (2nd round). Number seven is the Royals and they take U of the Pacific fireballer Dan Reichert. Number 10 Jon Garland, considered possibly the best high school pitching prospect in the draft, goes to the Cubs, who will swap him to the White Sox next July. Cincinnati defeats Arizona, 2-0, as Ron Villone and Scott Williamson combine on a 1-hitter. The Diamondbacks only his is a single by OF Tony Womack. Randy Johnson strikes out 17 in a magnificent but losing effort; in his last start he struck out 14 in losing to a no-hitter by Jimenez.
» July 21, 1999: The Reds defeat the Cardinals, 1-0, behind the 1-hit pitching of Ron Villone (8 innings) and Scott Williamson (1 inning) OF J.D. Drew's double is the only hit for St. Louis.
» August 19, 1999: Cincinnati defeats Pittsburgh, 1-0, as P Pete Harnisch hurls a 1-hitter. Harnisch fans 12 in his eight innings of work (Scott Williamson pitches the hitless 9th), allowing only a 7th-inning single to SS Mike Benjamin.
» November 8, 1999: Cincinnati Reds relief P Scott Williamson is named the National League Rookie of the Year. Williamson was not on the Reds roster at the beginning of the year, but ended with a 12–7 record.

An MRI on Cincinnati hurler Scott Williamson's right elbow reveals a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He will undergo surgery and miss the 2001 season.
