Signed by Oakland, Williard platooned with Mickey Tettleton that season. He was a little-used backup for the rest of his career, never getting more than 48 at-bats in any season after 1986. (ME/GL)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 9, 1982: The Phillies trade 2B Manny Trillo, OF George Vukovich, SS Julio Franco, catcher Jerry Willard, and pitcher Jay Baller to the Indians for 24-year-old OF Von Hayes. Hayes hit .250 with 14 home runs and 32 SBs for Cleveland last season and is considered a potential star.

» October 23, 1991: The Braves even the Series at two games apiece with a 3-2 win in Game 4. Journeyman catcher Jerry Willard's sac fly in the bottom of the 9th is the deciding blow. Terry Pendleton and Lonnie Smith stroke solo homers for the NLers, while Mike Pagliarulo does the same for the Twins.
