Widmar pitched pro ball for 17 years. Solely a reliever for the 1948 Browns, he spent 1949 winning 22 games in the International League and returned to St. Louis as a starter, going 11-24 in 1950-51. He became a minor league manager, and a pitching coach for several ML clubs. (FK)

» November 17, 1947: In a major deal that helps the Red Sox, Boston ships Roy Partee, Jim Wilson, Al Widmar, Eddie Pellagrini, Pete Layden and Joe Owstrowski and $310,000 to the Browns for Jack Kramer and Vern Stephens. Stephens will lead the AL in RBI in 2 of the next 3 seasons while averaging 33 HRs each year.

» April 10, 1950: Based on his 22 wins for Baltimore (IL) in 1949, St. Louis Browns P Al Widmar quits the team. He threatens a suit against baseball unless the team grants him a pay raise. He will sign within the week.

» April 25, 1951: In the opening game, a 8–6 win over the Browns, Eddie Robinson becomes the 8th player, but the first White Sox, to hit a ball over the RF grandstand, added 26 years ago, at Comiskey. His blast comes off Al Widmar. Also leaving the park are Delsing and Wood for St. Louis, and Zarilla for the Sox. Browns ace Ned Garver beats Marv Rotblatt, 7–4, in the nitecap

» May 30, 1951: The first place White Sox beat the Browns, 5–2 behind Billy Pierce. But in game 2, Randy Gumpert (3–0) stops Chicago's 4-game winning streak, beating the Sox, 8–1. Gumpert has two hits and two runs batted in. Al Widmar is the loser.

» November 27, 1951: The Browns send C Sherm Lollar, P Al Widmar, and infielder Tommy Upton to the White Sox for C Gus Niarhos, P Dick Littlefield, 1B Gordy Goldsberry, Joe DeMaestri, and OF Jim Rivera. Rivera, a favorite of Browns manager Hornsby, will return to the Sox in eight months.
