The 5'8" Whitted acquired the nickname Possum growing up in Durham, NC. A utility
man for the Cardinals, he was traded to the "Miracle" Braves in mid-1914 and collected
a World Series check. Then sold to the Phillies, he played the outfield in all five
of their 1915 WS games with the
Braves. He batted a consistent .281 as a Phillies
regular from 1915 to 1917 and was traded to Pittsburgh for Casey Stengel in 1919.
