Books and articles about Sammy White

White was Boston's first-string catcher from 1952 through 1959. On June 18, 1953, he became the only 20th-century player to score three runs in one inning, as the Red Sox scored 17 in the seventh against the Tigers. His best season with the bat was 1954, when he hit .282 with 14 HR and 75 RBI. But it was for his defensive skills and pitch-calling ability that he was prized. "He steals more strikes from umpires than anyone else," acknowledged Casey Stengel. "I'm not being critical. I'm just bowing to his skill."

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 13, 1953: Red Sox C Sammy White makes an unassisted DP.

» May 1, 1955: In a masterful performance, Bob Feller one-hits the Red Sox 2–0, with Sammy White's single in the 7th spoiling his bid for a no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader. It is his ML-record 12th one-hitter. In the nightcap, Cleveland's Herb Score fans 16 Boston hitters in a 2–1 win, missing Feller's strikeout record by 2. Score fans nine of the first 12 batters and 12 through the first five frames.

» May 28, 1955: After starting the season on the retired list, Ted Williams of the Red Sox becomes "unretired." He joins the team and collects a single in his first at bat, but the Red Sox bow to the Senators, 5–3. Camilo Pascual is the starter, but receives a warning from the ump when the Cuban Cutie twice hits Sammy White with pitches. His replacement, Maury McDermott, ignites a 5-run 6th with a home run.

» March 16, 1960: The Red Sox send catcher Sammy White and OF Jim Marshall to the Indians for C Russ Nixon. The trade is later canceled when White retires.

» June 13, 1960: The Indians trade C Russ Nixon and OF Carroll Hardy to the Red Sox for Marty Keough and P Ted Bowsfield. Nixon had been traded in March to the Red Sox for Sammy White, but the deal fell through when White refused to report. Hardy once pinch hit for Roger Maris in Cleveland, and will do the same for Ted Williams this year, the only time Williams will ever have a pinch hitter.

» July 27, 1961: Vada Pinson gives the Reds a 2–1 win over the Braves when he swipes home in the 9th inning. Pitcher Carlton Willey's throw beats Pinson but he kicks the ball out of the glove of C Sammy White.
