White was a Texas League basestealing champ with a top-notch throwing arm who couldn't
find a regular spot in a crowded Tiger outfield. His ten pinch hits in 1933 were
the AL high. Though he left the majors after 1938, he got a second chance with the
WWII A's.

He was coaching for Cleveland in mid-1960 when manager Joe Gordon was
swapped for Giant manager Jimmy Dykes; White took over while the stunned pair changed
teams, winning his one game. His son Mike played 100 games in Houston's infield and
outfield in 1963-65.
