The Red Sox bounce back with three of their own in their last at bat to defeat NY by a score of 12-11 and end John Wetteland's record save streak.
» October 22, 1996: The Yankees take Game 3, 5-2, behind the pitching of David Cone. John Wetteland gets the save as Bernie Williams drives in three runs for the winners.
» October 23, 1996: The Yankees even the Series by scoring twice in the 10th inning for an 8-6 win. Jim Leyritz ties the game in the 8th with a home run off Mark Wohlers as the Braves blow a 6-run lead. John Wetteland saves the game for Graeme Lloyd.
» October 24, 1996: The Yankees take their 3rd straight game in Atlanta, defeating the Braves, 1-0. Andy Pettitte records the win, while John Wetteland gets his 3rd save. John Smoltz is the hard-luck loser for Atlanta.
» October 26, 1996: The Yankees take their 4th in a row from the Braves, 3-2, giving them their 23rd World Championship. Joe Girardi's 3rd-inning triple is the key blow. Starter Jimmy Key gets the win with help from John Wetteland. Wetteland's four saves earn him the MVP trophy.

The Rangers sign free agent P John Wetteland to a 4-year contract worth $23 million. Wetteland had 43 saves for the Yankees this year.
