Books and articles about Joe West

West has cut several records with his Texas Cookin' Band. West said, "I don't want to quit umpiring, which has probably helped my music. If I were just a new singer, nobody'd listen. But `Joe West, NL Umpire,' that gets their attention." He also appeared in the movie The Naked Gun as an umpire.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 9, 1984: Umpire Joe West ejects two television cameramen from Shea Stadium when they allow the Mets to view replays of a controversial play at the plate in which Hubie Brooks is called out. The Mets beat Atlanta, 3–1, with Ron Darling getting the win.

» July 23, 1991: During an 8-5 Chicago win, Cincinnati P Rob Dibble throws a ball at Cubs OF Doug Dascenzo as Dascenzo runs to 1B. Dibble is fined by the league office, but not suspended. Cubs OF Andre Dawson bumps umpire Joe West and will be suspended for one game and fined $1,000.

» July 2, 1999: Umpire Tom Hallion is suspended for three games for his actions during an argument with Colorado catcher Jeff Reed and pitching coach Milt May on June 26th. The dispute began when Rockies pitcher Mike DeJean, while walking to his dugout complained to third base umpire Terry Tata about a check-swing call, and home plate ump Hallion, told DeJean to get in the dugout. Officials couldn't recall another suspension of an umpire for an on-field dispute. In 1990, National League president Bill White was prepared to suspend umpire Joe West for slamming Philadelphia pitcher Dennis Cook to the field, but commissioner Fay Vincent intervened and no discipline was imposed.

» February 28, 2002: Major league baseball announces it has rehired five umpires -- Gary Darling, Bill Hohn, Larry Poncino, Larry Vanover, and Joe West -- who had resigned during the 1999 season. Four other umpires -- Drew Coble, Greg Kosc, Terry Tata, and Frank Pulli -- are allowed to retire.
