Weis was the most improbable of heroes in the 1969 Miracle Mets' World Series. The
Long Islander's ninth-inning single won Game Two and his seventh-inning homer tied
Game Five, making the final Met victory possible. One motivation behind New York's
acquisition of the light-hitting utility infielder from Chicago in 1967 was that,
at age 29, he couldn't be called for Vietnam-era military duty. Weis,
who gave up
switch-hitting in 1969, had hit just six career homers prior to the WS smash.
