Weis was the most improbable of heroes in the 1969 Miracle Mets' World Series. The Long Islander's ninth-inning single won Game Two and his seventh-inning homer tied Game Five, making the final Met victory possible. One motivation behind New York's acquisition of the light-hitting utility infielder from Chicago in 1967 was that, at age 29, he couldn't be called for Vietnam-era military duty. Weis, who gave up switch-hitting in 1969, had hit just six career homers prior to the WS smash. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 27, 1967: Baltimore RF Frank Robinson is hurt in a 2B collision with Al Weis, as the White Sox beat the Orioles 5–0. Robinson suffers double vision and will miss 28 games.

» December 15, 1967: The Mets trade OF Tommy Davis, P Jack Fisher, P Billy Wynne, and C Dick Booker to the White Sox for OF Tommie Agee and IF Al Weis.

» July 15, 1969: The Mets rough up Fergie Jenkins for three home runs, including Al Weis's 2nd in two days, to beat the Cubs 9–5. The Cubs now lead New York by three 1/2 games. At the end of the game Tom Seaver jumps out of the dugout and clicks his heels several times. The Mets will win tomorrow as well.

» October 12, 1969: New York's Jerry Koosman and Ron Taylor combine on a 2-hitter, as Al Weis's 9th-inning single off loser Dave McNally gives the Mets a 2–1 win to even the World Series.

» October 16, 1969: In game five Cleon Jones, awarded 1B when shoe polish on the ball proves he was hit by a pitch, scores on Donn Clendenon's home run. Al Weis's home run an inning later ties the game. Ron Swoboda's double and two Baltimore errors in the 8th give New York a 5–3 win and the Series. Jerry Koosman completes the Mets amazin' achievement with a 5-hitter.

» July 1, 1971: The Mets release 2B Al Weis, a World Series hero less than two years earlier.
