Ward had the impossible task of replacing Hall of Famer Honus Wagner as Pirate shortstop when Wagner stepped down in 1917. In 1918 he left hostile Pittsburgh fans behind to serve in WWI France. There he read in the Paris edition of The New York Herald Tribune that he had been traded to the Dodgers, for whom he became a utility infielder upon his return. (JK)
