Waits, a curveball specialist, matched Bob Feller by becoming the second Indian to win back-to-back openers (1979 and 1980). His complete-game victory over the Yankees on the last day of the 1978 season forced the Yankees-Red Sox playoff. In 1979 he led the Indians with a career-high 16 wins. After going 2-13 in 1982, pitching with tendinitis in his right knee, he was traded to Milwaukee. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 13, 1975: The Indians trade P Gaylord Perry to the Rangers for hurlers Jim Bibby, Jackie Brown, Rick Waits, and an estimated $100,000.

» October 1, 1978: With the Yankees a game ahead and one to play, Cleveland's Rick Waits stops New York on five hits to win 9–2. Meanwhile, Boston takes their finale, their 8th in a row, on Luis Tiant's 5–0 shutout of the Blue Jays. Boston has two unearned runs in the 5th, a two-run homer by Rick Burleson in the 7th, and Jim Rice's 46th homer in the 8th for their scoring. Both teams end the season with identical 99–63 records, with a one-game playoff to determine the divisional champ.

» May 22, 1981: With Rick Waits on the mound in the 6th, the Yankees Bucky Dent hits into a triple play. But the Yankees win, 3–2, with the margin a 2-run home run by Dave Winfield. The win goes to Dave Righetti (1-0).

» June 6, 1983: The Brewers trade OF Gorman Thomas and pitchers Jamie Easterly and Ernie Camacho to the Indians for OF Rick Manning and pitcher Rick Waits.
