Wagner was one of many young players who tried out for the Athletics and were advised by Connie Mack to go to Duke University. He quit after his junior year and signed with the A's but did not catch regularly until 1942. For a time during WWII, he worked in a factory and played only on weekends when the A's were within traveling distance. (NLM)
