A fearless leadoff hitter and slick fielder, Vina came to the St. Louis Cardinals and set the table for an offense that won the NL Central Division in 2000. Vina crowded the plate so he could slap the ball to all fields, but suffered the consequences, having been hit by more pitches than anyone else in 2000.

After putting in time as a utility infielder for the Seattle Mariners and New York Mets, Vina found regular playing time with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1995. In 1998 he had a breakout year at the plate, batting .311 in 159 games, prompting trade rumors that hovered over him for nearly a year.

Looking for stability at second base and a leadoff hitter, the Cardinals acquired him before the 2000 season for Juan Acevedo and a pair of bush leaguers. His complete lack of home run power was compensated by a healthy on-base percentage and one, good speed, and of the best gloves in the majors. (EPW)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 30, 1994: The Brewers trade P Doug Henry to the Mets in exchange for Javier Gonzales and infielder Fernando Vina. Vina will play 140 games at 2B and hit .283 while Henry will be 2–8 with the Mets.

» May 31, 1996: The Indians bang 18 hits to beat Milwaukee 10–4, but the biggest hit is when Albert Belle decks Brewers 2B Fernando Vina with a vicious forearm in the 8th inning to set off a two-team brawl. Belle was on first after being hit with a pitch. In the 9th, Milwaukee reliever Terry Burrows throws three inside pitches before he finally plunks Belle. Tribe reliever Julian Tavarez then throws a pitch behind the back of Mike Matheny, who charges the mound. Both benches clear and during the brawl Tavarez slams down ump Joe Brinkman and Belle knuckles Brewer Steve Sparks. Belle, Tavarez, and Matheny will each receive 5-game suspensions for their brawling.

» June 1, 1996: A day after the Indians-Brewers brawl, the two teams get into it again. And quickly. Leadoff hitter Kenny Lofton doubles and then shoves 2B Fernando Vina to clear both benches. The Brewers win the game 2–1.

» September 12, 1996: Milwaukee trounces Texas, 15-4, led by 2B Fernando Vina who goes 5-for-6, with a triple, two home runs, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

» April 16, 1998: Milwaukee 2B Fernando Vina gets five hits in the Brewers' 5–3, 14–inning victory over the Expos.

» December 20, 1999: The Brewers trade 2B Fernando Vina to the Cardinals for P Juan Acevedo and two minor leaguers to be named.

» April 16, 2000: The Cardinals and Rockies split a doubleheader, with St. Louis winning the 1st game, 9-3, and the Rockies taking the 2nd, 14-13. Colorado scores eight runs in the 6th inning of the nightcap, while St. Louis 2B Fernando Vina strokes five hits for the Cards.

» October 7, 2000: The Cardinals defeat the Braves, 7-1, to sweep their series and move on to the NLCS. Jim Edmonds and Fernando Vina drive in three runs apiece for St. Louis as Atlanta fails to make the NLCS for the 1st time since 1990.

» April 6, 2001: The Cardinals score eight runs in the 5th inning of their 12-9 win over the Diamondbacks. St. Louis 2B Fernando Vina gets five hits, including a triple.
