A reserve outfielder and lefthanded pinch-hit specialist, Venable never had more
than 228 at-bats in nine ML seasons. The Giants traded him with Andy McGaffigan to
the Expos for Al Oliver before the 1984 season, and in 1985 Venable hit a career-high
.289 for the Reds, .371 as a pinch hitter.
