Slocumb will not last a season in Seattle, while Varitek and Lowe will become key members of the 1999 Sox. The Mariners also ship budding star Jose Cruz, Jr. to Toronto for relievers Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric. » May 28, 1999: The Red Sox defeat the Indians, 12-5, despite five passed ball by C Jason Varitek, who has trouble catching Tim Wakefield's knuckleball. Varitek, who has three PBs in the 1st inning, falls one short of the major-league record for a single game. He atones for his fielding sins by stroking three hits, including a home run.

Brian Daubach and Nomar Garciaparra homer in the 1st with Nomar adding another in the 3rd. Mike Stanley and Jason Varitek also homer in the game for Boston.

Boston gets 24 hits in the contest, including five by Mike Stanley and four each by John Valentin and Jason Varitek.
