Books and articles about Ed Vargo

Vargo, the only ML umpire to call no-hitters in three consecutive seasons, was behind the plate for two of Sandy Koufax's no- hitters, including his 1965 perfect game against the Cubs. Vargo was also plate umpire when Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth's home run record at 714, and he worked the last games played at both the Polo Grounds and Forbes Field. Vargo took a Fourth of July home run away from Tim McCarver in 1976, when the Phillies catcher passed runner Garry Maddox. (RTM)
