FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 13, 1996: San Diego 3B Ken Caminiti is named the MVP of the National League. After the All-Star break, Caminiti led all NL players with a.360 average, 28 homers, and 81 RBI. He sealed the Padres NL West title by going 4-for-4 on September 27 against the Dodgers Ismael Valdes.

» June 8, 1997: Tom Lampkin, Royce Clayton and Delino DeShields homer as the visiting Cardinals whip Los Angeles, 9–3. For the second time in four days, a Dodger starting pitcher mixes it up with manager Bill Russell in the dugout. Starter Pedro Astacio, starts the discussion on the mound with Russell in the 4th inning and then, after the 3rd out, sprints to the dugout and slams his glove against the bench before resuming the argument. On Thursday night, Ismael Valdes argued with Russell after being lifted for a pinch-hitter.

» June 27, 1998: Ismael Valdes hurls a 1–hit shutout in beating the Pirates, 2–0. Pittsburgh's only hit is a single by 1B Kevin Young as Valdes fans seven without walking a batter.

» August 21, 1999: In their current 4-game series against the Giants, the Dodgers start pitchers from four different countries, something they have done before, but this time, the Dodgers have three continents covered. In yesterday's 6–5 win it was Eric Gagne of Canada; In today's 9–4 win it is Jeff Williams of Australia; In tomorrow's 5–4 loss it will be Ismael Valdes of Mexico; and the next day it will be Chan Ho Park from Korea, in a 5–3 win.

» December 12, 1999: The Cubs obtain P Ismael Valdes (9–14) and 2B Eric Young from the Dodgers for pitchers Terry Adams and Chad Ricketts, and a player to be named. Despite missing 40 games, Young swiped 51 bases in 1999.

» July 26, 2000: The Dodgers obtain oft-injured P Ismael Valdes from the Cubs for minor leaguers Jamie Arnold and Jorge Piedra. The Dodgers swapped Valdes to the Cubs last year. Piedra was a top prospect in 1998, hitting .383 at Great Falls, while reaching base in 54 straight games.

» January 4, 2001: The Angels sign free agent P Ismael Valdes to a contract.

» June 8, 2001: Ismael Valdes pitches six 2/3 innings and Garret Anderson homers off Giovanni Carrara to give the Angels a 1–0 win over the Dodgers.

» January 28, 2002: The Rangers continue to shore up their pitching staff by signing free agent Ismael Valdes to a 1-year contract.
