Plagued by terrible inconsistency, Underwood never fulfilled the promise of his first season. The hard thrower was the lefthander on the Topps All-Rookie Team in 1975 after a career-high 14 wins. Extremely effective at Veterans Stadium (23-5) and against St. Louis (5-0), Tom was switched from starting to relief in 1977, then was traded to the Cards where he moved back to starting. He and Victor Cruz went to Toronto for Pete Vuckovich on December 6, 1977. Underwood led the Blue Jays in strikeouts in 1978 and 1979 and was the club's top pitcher the latter season. At age twenty-six, he seemed ready to blossom during a fine season with the Yankees (13-9, 3.66). A poor start in 1981 brought a trade to Oakland. Used mostly in relief, he led the A's in games pitched in 1982 and 1983. In 1979, Tom started, and lost, a game to his brother Pat of the Tigers. (ME)
    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 15, 1977: The Phillies swap batteries with Montreal sending P Wayne Twitchell and C Tim Blackwell for C Barry Foote and P Dan Warthen. Then Philadelphia ships P Tom Underwood, OF Rick Bosetti and 1B Dane Iorg to the Cardinals for Bake McBride and Steve Waterbury. McBride will hit .339 after arriving in Philley.

» November 1, 1979: In separate deals, the Yankees acquire OF Ruppert Jones from the Mariners and C Rick Cerone and Tom Underwood from the Blue Jays, giving up seven players, including popular 1B Chris Chambliss, SS Damaso Garcia, OF Juan Beniquez, and Ps Jim Beattie and Paul Mirabella. Chambliss will be with the Blue Jays a month before they swap him to Atlanta.

» February 8, 1984: One day after losing Type A free agent Tom Underwood to the Orioles, the A's "steal" pitcher Tim Belcher from the Yankees as compensation. The number-one selection in last June's draft, Belcher did not sign with the Twins and was available in the January draft. The Yankees signed him on February 2nd, only to lose him because they had already submitted their list of 26 protected players.
