First signed out of Venezuela by Philadelphia, Trillo debuted with Oakland and was the Cubs' second baseman for four years before returning to the Phillies in a 1979 trade. He batted a career-high .292 for the 1980 World Champion Phillies and was named MVP of the LCS when he hit .381 with four RBI against Houston. Winning his third Gold Glove in 1982, he set since-broken major league second base records for consecutive errorless games in a season (89) and consecutive errorless chances accepted (479). He also set a since-broken league records for fielding percentage (.9937) at second base. Sent to Cleveland in a deal for Von Hayes that December, in 1983 he became the first player to be chosen to the starting All-Star squad in successive years in different leagues. Six weeks after the 1983 All-Star Game, the Indians sold Trillo to Montreal. By 1986, he was back with the Cubs as a utility man. (DAS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» October 23, 1974: The Cubs trade sweet-swinging Billy Williams, a fixture at Wrigley for 16 years, to the A's for 2B Manny Trillo and pitchers Darold Knowles and Bob Locker.

» June 25, 1977: At Old-Timers Day in Chicago, the Cubs score four in the 9th inning to edge the Mets, 5–4. Larry Biittner doubles in two runs, and Bill Buckner's wind-blown fly eludes two outfielders for a 3rd double in the frame. With the sack full, Manny Trillo's hits a grounder to 3B and beats out the attempted DP for the winner.

» May 24, 1978: The Cubs take over first with a 6–4 come-from-behind win over the Phillies. Dave Rader's 2-run triple ties the game in the 8th and Manny Trillo's 2-run home run in the 10th wins it.

» February 23, 1979: The Phillies trade five players to the Cubs for 2B Manny Trillo, OF Greg Gross, and C Dave Rader. Chicago gets Barry Foote, Jerry Martin, Ted Sizemore, and two minor leaguers.

» July 31, 1982: Phillies 2B Manny Trillo misplays Bill Buckner's grounder in the 7th inning of a 2–0 win over the Cubs, ending his errorless string at 89 games and 479 consecutive chances. He falls two games short of Joe Morgan's record 91-game streak, and his 479 straight chances set a ML record.

» December 9, 1982: The Phillies trade 2B Manny Trillo, OF George Vukovich, SS Julio Franco, catcher Jerry Willard, and pitcher Jay Baller to the Indians for 24-year-old OF Von Hayes. Hayes hit .250 with 14 home runs and 32 SBs for Cleveland last season and is considered a potential star.

» May 12, 1984: The Giants tip the Expos, 8–7, but lose 2B Manny Trillo when he is hit on the hand by a Steve Rogers pitch. Trillo will be out six weeks with the fracture.

» December 11, 1985: The Giants send 2B Manny Trillo to the Cubs for SS Dave Owen, and C Alex Trevino to the Dodgers for OF Candy Maldonado; the Phillies trade pitchers John Denny and Jeff Gray to the Reds for OF Gary Redus and P Tom Hume, and the Dodgers trade veteran catcher Steve Yeager to the Mariners for P Ed Vande Berg.
