Trebelhorn, a schoolteacher in the off-season, took over the Brewers at the end of
1986 after George Bamberger retired. The former strong-armed minor league catcher
led the team to third
place finishes in his first two full seasons, exhibiting a
patient style well suited to the streaky team. The club began the 1987 season with
13 straight wins, tying the ML record for fast starts, but lost 12 straight two weeks
later.
