The burly Todd arrived in the ML with an intimidating reputation, having punched out Dizzy Dean in the Texas League for an alleged knockdown pitch. A solid journeyman catcher, his best year was 1937 with the Pirates &) x x when he hit .307 with 86 RBI and caught 128 games without allowing a single passed ball, a record that still stands. (JK)

» December 21, 1935: Pittsburgh sends P Claude Passeau and C Earl Grace to the Phils for C Al Todd. Passeau will have three decent seasons before blossoming with the Cubs.

» December 8, 1939: The White Sox trade Gee Walker to the Senators for Pete Appleton and Taffy Wright. The Sox also pick up OF Moose Solters from the Browns for OF Ray Radcliffe, both sluggers coming of poor years. The Dodgers get Gus Mancuso and Newt Kimball from the Cubs for Al Todd.
