Thurman's entry into the major leagues was delayed by baseball's color line. He played for the Homestead Grays from 1946 to 1948 and the Kansas City Monarchs in 1949 before being signed by the Yankees. His teammates nicknamed him "El Murcaro" (The Owl). He made the majors as an extra outfielder for the slugging Cincinnati Reds, and made half his ML appearances as a pinch hitter. In 1957 he hit four pinch homers. (RTM)

» May 14, 1957: Winners of 12 straight on the road, the Reds, return home and lose to the Phillies, 10–8. Ed Bouchee hits a 2-run home run in the 9th to give the Phils their winning margin. Bob Thurman, who made his ML debut two years ago at the age of 37, hits a 3-run homer for the Reds in the 5th inning. Thurman is the first ML player to homer on his 40th birthday.

» September 19, 1983: Phillies 2B Joe Morgan celebrates his 40th birthday by going 4-for-5 with two home runs in a 7–6 win over the Cubs. He will go 4-for-5 again tomorrow in an 8–5 win over the Cubs. He's the 2nd player to celebrate his 40th birthday with a dinger: Bob Thurman was the first, in 1957.

» September 19, 1998: Texas strikes two home run marks today. Mike Simms of the Rangers hits his 16th home run of the year to tie the major league mark for most home runs with less than 200 at bats in a season. Eddie Robinson of the Yankees and Bob Thurman of the Reds accomplished the feat in 1955 and 1957, respectively. Juan Gonzalez belts his 300th career homer, off Jimmy Haynes, but the Rangers lose to Oakland, however, 8–4.
