Thompson jumped from Double-A to the Giants in 1986, and finished second to Todd Worrell in the NL Rookie of the Year voting after hitting .271 as San Francisco's starting second baseman. In the field, Thompson is reliable if unspectacular, with a knack for turning double plays, but at the plate he often overswings, striking out over 100 times a year without much power (he hit a career-high 10 HR in 1987). On June 27, 1986 he set a ML record by being caught stealing four times in one game. (SCL)
