In 1926, Thevenow starred for the Cardinals' first World Champions, led NL shortstops in putouts and assists, and hit his only two regular-season home runs. He was credited with another home run in the WS when Babe Ruth dropped his Game Two fly ball. The next spring, Thevenow held out, and, when he returned, suffered a fractured ankle in June. The injury cost him his speed and left him with a limp. In later seasons, he broke his jaw, a finger, and, in a 1931 auto accident, a leg. All told, he played 100 or more games in only 6 of his 14 ML seasons. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 17, 1926: The Cardinals regain the National League lead in a 10–1 win over the Phils. Light-hitting Tommy Thevenow bangs his first ML homer, an inside the park liner off Jack Knight. The Reds continue to nose-dive, dropping a 5–4 decision to the Giants on Frankie Frisch's 10th inning home run. The Reds will lose seven of the final 9.

» September 22, 1926: The Cardinals, led by Les Bell's ML record-tying three triples and a double, roll by the Dodgers, 15–7, to increase their 1st place lead of Cincy to two 1/2 games. Rookie Tommy Thevenow and Jim Bottomley chip in with home runs. For Thevenow, it is his 2nd homer in six days, again an inside-the-park drive. He'll play another 12 years—3351 at bats—and never hit another homer.

» October 3, 1926: Grover Alexander (9-7) faces Urban Shocker (19-11) as a record 63,600 look on. The Yankees score twice in the 2nd, but Old Pete sets down the last 21 batters, striking out 10. Billy Southworth and SS Tommy Thevenow collect three hits each, including a home run apiece, for a 6–2 St. Louis win. Thevenow's is a line drive that skips by Ruth for an inside-the-park homer: Thevenow will hit two regular season home runs in his career-both inside the park.

» June 21, 1927: The Cardinals sweep two games from the Cubs, but lose SS Tommy Thevenow when he breaks his leg in the 4th inning of the 2nd game. It will be Rabbit redux, as Rabbit Maranville will be signed to take the shortstop spot. Jess Haines wins the opener, 6–5 in 13 innings over Charlie Root; Flint Rhem coasts to a 12–3 win in the nitecap as the Cards slam Buck Brillheart.

» November 6, 1930: The Pirates trade SS Dick Bartell, a .320 hitter, to the Phillies for defensive star SS Tommy Thevenow, and P Claude Willoughby. The Phils get the better of the shortstop swap, while Willoughby lives up to his nickname "Flunky."

» September 7, 1931: The Pirates sweep a holiday pair from the Reds, 6–1 and 4–3, scoring three in the 8th of the p.m. game. The Bucs lose SS Tommy Thevenow when he fractures his ankle in two places sliding in the 6th inning of the opener.

» January 6, 1937: The Giants buy SS Tommy Thevenow from Cincinnati.
