The versatile Cuban infielder started as a third baseman in the Giants organization,
but was drafted by the Cubs and played two years as their regular second baseman.
In 1960 he was traded to the Phillies along with Cal Neeman for Don Cardwell and
Ed Bouchee. The deal proved one of the best in Phillies history; the popular Taylor
played 15 seasons in Philadelphia. After a half-dozen years at 2B, he became a valuable
utility man and pinch hitter. Dealt to the Tigers in 1972, he helped them to a division
title that year before returning to the Phillies in 1974 for his final three ML seasons.
During his career, Taylor collected 2,007 hits, scored 1,005 runs, and stole 234
bases. His six steals of home for the Phillies is tied for second place on their
all-time list.
