The versatile Cuban infielder started as a third baseman in the Giants organization, but was drafted by the Cubs and played two years as their regular second baseman. In 1960 he was traded to the Phillies along with Cal Neeman for Don Cardwell and Ed Bouchee. The deal proved one of the best in Phillies history; the popular Taylor played 15 seasons in Philadelphia. After a half-dozen years at 2B, he became a valuable utility man and pinch hitter. Dealt to the Tigers in 1972, he helped them to a division title that year before returning to the Phillies in 1974 for his final three ML seasons. During his career, Taylor collected 2,007 hits, scored 1,005 runs, and stole 234 bases. His six steals of home for the Phillies is tied for second place on their all-time list. (AL)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 1, 1958: The Cubs Tony Taylor hits a ball inside the 3B line that falls into the rain gutter in fair territory at Wrigley Field. San Francisco rookie OF Leon Wagner chases the ball, but is fooled by Cubs relief pitchers staring intently under the bench. Wagner does not look for the ball in the gutter 40 to 50 feet further down. Taylor reaches home on the hit.

» May 13, 1960: Philadelphia suffers its 3rd straight 1–0 shutout, losing to the Reds in Cincinnati. The Phillies, losers of back-to-back 1–0 games in San Francisco, tie the major-league record for straight 1–0 losses. Jim O'Toole's win is Cincinnati's 9th straight. The Phils announce a trade of 1B Ed Bouchee and P Don Cardwell to the Cubs for 2B Tony Taylor and C Cal Neeman.

» August 9, 1960: With fine relief pitching of Lindy McDaniel in the opener and a 5-hitter by Curt Simmons in the nitecap, the Cards sweep the Phils, 5–4 and 6–0. Phillie Tony Taylor ties a major-league record for 2B by going the entire doubleheader (18 innings) without a putout, the first to achieve the feat since Connie Ryan of the Phillies, June 14, 1953.

» July 2, 1961: Pitcher Glen Hobbie and Tony Taylor each hit a pair of homers for the Cubs, but it is not enough as the Cardinals win, 10–9. Pinch hitter Richie Ashburn's bases-loaded single in the 8th brings home the deciding run .

» July 31, 1964: At Philadelphia, 24,197 see Chris Short, with help from Jack Baldschun, stop the Dodgers, 6–1. John Callison starts the Phils scoring with a 2-run homer in the 1st, off Ron Moeller. Tommy Davis hits an 8th inning double, that caroms off 2B Tony Taylor's mouth, kayoing both Taylor and Chris Short. Maury Wills has four singles and drives in the lone run.

» September 11, 1969: The Cubs take a 1–0 lead into the 3rd inning against the Phils when, with a 3–2 count on Dick Allen and runners on 1st and 2nd, pitcher Dick Selma unexpectedly throws to 3B instead of to home. The throws sails over the head of a surprised Ron Santo and the Phils Tony Taylor scores the tying run. Selma and Santo had practiced the move in spring training, but had never used it during the season. The Phils go on to win again over Chicago.

» May 26, 1970: Tony Taylor cracks an inside-the-park homer in the 9th inning with two men on to give the Phils a 3–2 win at Montreal. The batter before Taylor, pinch hitter Byron Browne singled and was called out for passing baserunner Tommy Hutton, who held up to see if RF Rusty Staub had trapped Browne's hit. Taylor gets Browne off the hook with his drive, circling the bases after CF Adolfo Phillips crashes into the wall.

» July 2, 1970: At Connie Mack Stadium, the Phils break their scoreless streak of 53 innings and sweep two from the Mets, 6–1 and 3–2. With successive pinch hits by Tony Taylor, Ron Stone, and Byron Browne, the Phils score six in the 8th inning to win the opener for Jim Bunning, then again come from behind to win the nitecap for Chris Short. The opener is the 6,000th game played at the ancient stadium.

» June 12, 1971: Phillies 2B Terry Harmon accepts 18 chances during a 3–0 win over the Padres, setting a modern ML record. Meanwhile, the Phils deal another 2B, veteran Tony Taylor, to the Tigers for two minor leaguers.

» June 27, 1972: Mickey Lolich is staked to 4–0 lead when the Tigers hit three consecutive first-inning home runs against New York's Wade Blasingame, making his American League debut. Tony Taylor leads off with a walk before Aurelio Rodriguez, Al Kaline, and Willie Horton wade in with homers to finish Blasingame. Lolich, pitching on two days rest, notches his 12th, winning 5–2. Bobby Murcer's home run accounts for one of the Yank runs.

» September 26, 1976: In the last big league games at Jarry Park, the Phillies beat the Expos, 4–1, in the first game of a doubleheader to clinch the National League East title. Philley takes the nitecap, 2–1. Following the 2nd game, Dick Allen jumps the team in protest of the fact that veteran Tony Taylor is not listed on the post-season roster.

» August 6, 2000: The Blue Jays obtain 2B Mickey Morandini from the Phillies in exchange for a player to be named. He just misses moving into second on the all-time games played list for Philadelphia Phillies 2B having played 926 games at second base for Philadelphia, the third highest total in franchise history, six games short of Otto Knabe (1905, 1907-13). Tony Taylor (1960-71 and 1974-76) holds the record having played in 1,003 games for the Phils at second.
