Taylor saved 73 games in his career, almost all as bullpen ace for the Cardinals and Mets. In his first start, for the Indians in 1962, he lost a 12-inning duel, 4-0, on a grand slam by Boston's Carroll Hardy. Traded to St. Louis, he recorded a NL-high eight relief wins for the 1964 World Champions. When the Mets took the championship in 1969, Taylor won nine games and, for the second of three straight seasons, saved 13. In six career postseason appearances, he did not allow a run and had three saves. The Toronto native graduated from medical school five years after he finished pitching and became the Blue Jays' team physician. (KT)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 18, 1963: Rookie Dick Nen crushes St. Louis's pennant hopes with a 9th-inning game-tying home run off reliever Ron Taylor. Ron Perranoski wins 6–5 in 13 innings for a 3-game sweep of the threatening Cards. Nen's home run is his only hit in eight at bats with the Dodgers.

» June 11, 1965: St. Louis trades pitchers Ron Taylor and Mike Cuellar to the Astros for P Hal Woodeshick.

» July 30, 1969: Its a bad day for the Mets at Shea. In the 1st of two games, Houston scores 11 runs in the 9th inning, eight coming home on grand slams by Jimmy Wynn and Denis Menke, to trounce the Mets 16–3. This is the first time this century in the National League that two grand slams have come in the same inning, with Mets pitchers Cal Koonce and Ron Taylor teeing up the honors. (The last time in the American League was July 18, 1962.) Taylor also serves up a single to Houston relief P Fred Gladding, the only hit of Gladding's career in 63 ML at bats and 450 games. Game two is no different as the Astros tally 10 runs in the 3rd inning to thrash the Mets, 11–5. Curt Blefary triples with the sacks full and pitcher Larry Dierker (13-8) homers with a man on.

» October 12, 1969: New York's Jerry Koosman and Ron Taylor combine on a 2-hitter, as Al Weis's 9th-inning single off loser Dave McNally gives the Mets a 2–1 win to even the World Series.

» August 9, 1970: At Three Rivers Stadium, Willie Stargell hits an 8th inning homer into the 70-foot high right field upper deck, the first player to hit one up there. The pitch is served up by Mets reliever Ron Taylor. The next two hit up there will be by Stargell, who will hit four of the first 7; Bob Robertson, Phillie Greg Luzinski, and Bobby Bonilla, in 1987, will also reach the seats. The Pirates win, 8–3. Nolan Ryan is the loser, allowing four runs in six innings, allowing three hits, walking seven and striking out 10.
