The volatile Taveras broke Max Carey's Pirate record by stealing an NL-leading 70 bases in 1977. His 206 steals rank sixth in Pirate history, but he had no home run power and was extremely erratic in the field. His 1979 trade to the Mets for steady Tim Foli was a key move in bringing that year's pennant to Pittsburgh. (ME)
